Thy Dungeonman 1 & 2 for Playdate
A downloadable game
This game contains ports of the 2004 flash games Thy Dungeonman and Thy Dungeonman 2 to the Playdate device. To play this version, you will need to sideload the downloaded .pdx file onto your Playdate device, or - if you don't have a Playdate device - run it using the Playdate Simulator provided by Panic. The original games were created by Jonathan Howe, Mike and Matt Chapman for the Homestar Runner website. You can still play the original flash games here:
These are tiny games, (the first one is barely a game at all) but I did my best to faithfully recreate just about every inch of them for the Playdate platform. I did this as a fun project to get started with learning how to develop for the Playdate handheld. In theory, these versions should respond the same in all situations as the original games would.
New to this version is an optional guided input feature that allows the player to pick from a preset selection of verbs and nouns for your input. This lets you play the game on the playdate without having to type in every command, but you can still do things the old fashioned way if you'd rather by enabling free input from the Playdate menu!
Additionally, you can use the crank to scroll through your selections and/or the screen output, as well as to speed up or slow down the scroll speed of the text as it is being output to the screen!
I hope some fans of the Playdate and/or Homestar Runner get a kick out of seeing this small, silly project that nobody asked for.

Hi! When I try to “get” anything, it doesn’t let me. Is this a bug or an intentional comedic design choice?
If you are talking about the first game, there are a couple things you can "get" but not many. The second game has a couple more. I can't say whether it's a bug it not in your case unless you let me know specifically what you were trying to get.
Or, if you are stuck, you can look up a walk through for the original flash game. If you are trying to get something that the walkthrough says you should be able to get in the original but cannot get in my version, then let me know, as that would definitely be a bug!
Thank you for your message. Sometimes when I load up the game and try to “Get Scroll”, it gets its. Other times when I load it up it says I can’t get it
Yeah it feels like it's a bit buggy. It wouldn't even let me Get Ye Flask! But a couple issues aside I think these are solid ports. Any chance for Thy Dungeoman III?
I believe I have finally tracked down and fixed this bug that you were experiencing. I have uploaded a new version (1.1.0) that hopefully addresses this. Feel free to download and sideload the new version, and let me know if you no longer have issues!
I had hopes to tackle Thy Dungeonman III as well, but it's a much more involved project that's a bit harder to translate to the PlayDate (due to the Good Graphics of it all). I might tackle it one day, but if I did, it would probably be as a standalone project!
